Our Mission

Committed to Transforming Nutrition and Livelihoods in Rural Communities.

The Eden Social Development Foundation (ESDF) empowers small-scale farmers to fight malnutrition and poverty through sustainable soybean farming. By providing training, resources, and support—especially to women and youth—we help communities build food security, economic opportunity, and lasting self-reliance.

Training

We provide hands-on training in sustainable soybean cultivation, equipping farmers with modern, eco-friendly practices to boost yields and protect soil health.

Resources

Access to quality raw materials and certified inputs ensures that farmers can plant, grow, and harvest soybeans efficiently and consistently.

Markets

We support the establishment of reliable markets for harvested soy, linking farmers to buyers and strengthening local agricultural value chains.

Nutrition

Workshops on using soy in everyday household meals help combat malnutrition by promoting affordable, protein-rich food options.

Cultivating Change Through Soybean Success Stories (2024/2025 Season)

Through the Soy on the Move programme, the Eden Social Development Foundation turns its mission into action — empowering smallholder farmers across South Africa with the skills, inputs, and support to grow, process, and benefit from protein-rich soybeans.

The impact is clear: farmers are increasing yields, improving food security, and building sustainable pathways to economic independence across multiple provinces.

Province: KwaZulu-Natal

Region: Uthukela District (Okhahlamba Area)

Season: 2024/2025

Okhahlamba’s farmers have become a benchmark for success within ESDF’s programme. Over 740 tons were harvested from 742 hectares, generating over R4.5 million in combined income — despite unpredictable weather.

Supported by the Department of Agriculture’s LandCare initiative, local producers adopted conservation-farming methods and improved threshing equipment. Their story reflects how education and innovation turn adversity into lasting food and income security.

Province: KwaZulu-Natal

Region: Harry Gwala & Ugu Districts

Season: 2024/2025

Across the rolling hills of the South Coast, soybean producers in Ubuhlebezwe and Umzumbe are proving that collaboration drives growth. With ESDF guidance and local Department of Agriculture support, these smallholders harvested over 85 tons and generated nearly R500 000 in income.

Farmers report renewed optimism as soybean cultivation becomes a reliable income source. A planned 20-hectare pilot project in Kokstad will further strengthen the region’s potential as a model for community-based agricultural empowerment.

Province: KwaZulu-Natal

Region: Zululand & Umzinyathi Districts

Season: 2024/2025

In northern KwaZulu-Natal, a new wave of motivated farmers is transforming soybean production into a collective success story. Despite heavy rainfall and downgrading of some beans, farmers across Greytown, Dundee, Paul Pietersburg, and Vryheid produced over 135 tons from 299 hectares, earning close to R900 000.

Their determination and peer learning, supported by active local advisors, showcase the strength of grassroots agricultural mentorship. ESDF plans to expand planting areas for the top-performing growers in the 2025 season—turning lessons learned into lasting progress.
